The Wellbeing Course aims to provide free education and guidance on simple but effective techniques for managing depression and or anxiety. The Course helps people with thoughts, behaviours and physical symptoms of depression and anxiety.
- Why was this Course developed?
The Wellbeing Course was developed in Australia by the eCentreClinic. The Course was designed because so many people who have depression and anxiety never seek treatment, but many have access to the Internet. Because depression and anxiety commonly occur at the same time, information is provided on both conditions.
- How effective is the Wellbeing Course?
We have now had more than 700 Saskatchewan residents enroll in the Wellbeing Course and the results are very encouraging. More than 94% of those who completed the Course felt the Course was worth their time and that they would recommend this Course to others who have depression or anxiety. Most clients said it was hard work. Most experienced reduced anxiety and or depression and an improvement in their level of day-to-day activities.
- What is involved in the Wellbeing Course?
The Wellbeing Course is made up of 5 easy to understand lessons and takes 8 weeks to complete. Lessons consist of educational materials that are accessed online. Clients are encouraged to work on various activities during the week; this often takes several hours. Throughout the Course, clients receive automated emails with important reminders and prompts.
- What support is available from therapists?
The Wellbeing Course is therapist-assisted. This means that during the week clients can send questions or comments to their designated therapist though a secure message system. On a set day each, the therapist checks the website, reviews client progress on the Course and responds to messages. Most contact with the therapist is through secure emails, but sometimes therapists contact clients by phone.
- Who provides therapist-assistance?
In this Course, clients are randomly assigned to either have assistance from therapists working in community clinics in Saskatchewan or therapists working directly in the Online Therapy Unit. Some therapists have fully completed their training while others are graduate students under supervision. Most therapists are trained in psychology, social work or nursing.
- What research is being done on this Course?
We are currently trying to determine how to best provide therapist-assistance to clients. In order to study this, some clients will be randomly assigned to receive Standard Support, which means their therapist will contact them once a week for 8 weeks. Other clients will receive Optional Support, which means that the therapist will only contact the client if the client requests assistance.
- How will my progress on the Course be monitored?
All clients who complete this Course complete brief questionnaires before they begin the Course, on a weekly basis, after the Course is complete and then 3 months later. These questionnaires help us assess how you are doing.
- Who can take part in the Course?
The Course is designed for those who have symptoms of depression or anxiety, are 18 years of age or older, are from Saskatchewan, are comfortable using and have access to the Internet, and have a local medical contact available in case of emergencies. The Course is not recommended if you have severe problems with alcohol or drugs, mania, psychosis, or strong thoughts of suicide.
